ABOUT THE MARKET
RUSSIA is the largest country in the world and is one of the top emerging games markets. The territory’s market has shown huge growth over the past two years and is now starting to rival western territories. A report by Russian internet firm
Mail.Ru found that market revenue reached $1.3bn (£807m) in 2012, a 16 per cent increase on the previous year. Much of this growth has been driven by the success of online gaming within Russia. The sector accounted for $900m (£558m) of the market’s total profit in 2012 having increased by 64 per cent, which followed on from a 54 per cent rise last year. Fuelling this impressive growth is the popularity of MMO gaming within Russia. Games within the genre continue to lead the market with revenue of $402m (£249m). However, social gaming continues to gain traction in Russia, generating $353m (£219m) in revenue last year.

Market revenue reached £807m in 2012, a 16 per cent increase on the previous year.
As for retail, PC products dominate the sector with a market share of over 80 per cent. The platform had struggled previously due to poor distribution channels and a high rate of piracy. However, lower pricing and the emergence of digital distribution
channels such as Steam and Origin have helped boost the market and Russia now ranks amongst both services’ Top Three EMEA countries. The revenue of PC games fell in 2012 to $209m (£129m), down from $270m (£167m) in 2011. Nevertheless, the growth of these digital platforms, mixed with the high number of gamers within Russia has made the country an attractive territory for both publisher and developers to target with their products. Console gaming within the country continues to solidify its position as both the 360 and PS3 reached install bases of over 500,000 consumers. As a result, the console market has shown steady growth with a two per cent year-on-year increase. Russia’s games market lacks any dominating retail players and smaller stores are able to hold their own against chains and games specialists.
