ABOUT THE MARKET

SLOVENIA is similar to most of its Eastern European neighbours in that it maintains a strong games market despite its small size. It has a variety of electronics chains, but the country’s retail landscape is dominated by a single player: Big Bang. The firm has 16 stores across Slovenia and is the largest retailer of audio, video and computer products in the country with a market share of up to 60 per cent.

As a result, publishers whose games are not stocked by Big Bang have a very small presence within the market, while others may have trouble being discovered by consumers at all.

The leading retailer was at the centre of controversy earlier this year regarding its early release of FIFA 14. Multiple reports from the country, including one

The most popular products continue to be PC and PS3. Sony has historically had a strong presence within the country, as the PS2 also remained a highly popular product until 2012 where its sales began to dwindle.

submitted to MCV, confirmed the retailer had broken the street date for the EA title, with some able to obtain it a week before its scheduled launch.

Both Nintendo and Microsoft have a diminished presence within the country due to low install bases for their home consoles including the Wii, Wii U, 3DS and Xbox 360.

This issue is only worsened by the high rate of piracy experienced throughout Slovenia, particularly across these platforms. The high level of piracy has been attributed by many to the disproportionate pricing of video games, with many consumers opting to purchase pirated titles for a fraction of the retail price. Further complications arise from the ongoing effect of the recession. Slovenia was hit hard when the economic turmoil began and its recovery from this continues throughout 2013. As a result, its retail market remains a difficult environment to navigate.
