ABOUT THE MARKET
IN 2011, the Czech games market was worth €85m in terms of both hardware and software retail sales. It was approximately 42 per cent the size of neighbouring market Poland. And while exact 2012 figures are yet to emerge, local retailers are confident there was little change. “The video game market in the Czech Republic is stable – in fact, growing slightly,” says JRC CEO Lukáš Karel. “Console gaming is getting stronger while the PC segment is stagnating. This is an expected development given the wider acceptance of gaming as regular entertainment.” JRC, also known as GAME Czech, is the biggest of the four main chains, ahead of X Zone, Tesco and Datart. JRC purchased GAME Czech last year after the collapse of the UK HQ. Meanwhile, online retail is on the rise, estimated by one distributor to sell just as much software as High Street stores. There are 21,000

individual online stores of all kinds in Czech, compared to 26,000 in the UK. And Amazon UK is still a popular destination for Czech gamers. Like many European nations, the Czech Republic is the domain of the PC, which accounts for at least 50 per cent of market revenues. Budget PSP and PS2 games also sell well – demonstrating the price concerns of consumers – while Xbox 360 is far outperforming the PS3. “Despite reasonable economic conditions, the games market is no doubt facing tougher times,” says Catapult Business Solutions founder Chris Stanton-Jones. “The market has become even more price-sensitive and consumers are focusing on the ‘safe bet’ blockbuster titles, for which they are prepared to pay full price.” For more information on the Czech Republic and other emerging markets, please contact
