The Plymouth MAG Magical Mystery Tour
Plymouth MAG go hunting for treasure and make bring some home for MAG
Bored with the usual, ‘follow the leader’ rides, Plymouth MAG decided to do something completely different. The plan was to have a ‘treasure hunt’ style of ride, of around 40 or 50 miles, with riders following clues to landmarks around the Plymouth area. “We always try to do something a little bit different and I wanted a ride where people can ride at a pace they’re comfortable with,” said Pete Bourner, Plymouth MAG Rep. “A treasure hunt style of ride seemed perfect. We had no set route and riders chose their speed.” Leaving from The Morley Arms in Plymouth, riders were given an A5 envelope containing clues to five destinations. One of the clues was marked as the ‘final destination,’ so even the finish point was a secret.
Points were awarded for proof of each destination reached, with bonus points for ingenuity and finding the hidden MAG stickers on route.
Pete adds, “This way, we didn’t need marshals standing around for hours waiting for riders and being the first rider back didn’t necessarily mean you’d won. Thirty people joined the ride and they came up trumps with their imagination.” With phones having cameras, the popular method of proof was photos. Some of these had obviously got people’s minds working in weird and wonderful ways.
Even the security guards at the
Wrigleys factory joined in by giving and signing a day pass for some riders.
But two riders surpassed all expectations. They brought photo evidence along with gravel from

one landmark, grass from another, part of a bush from another, and even managed to carry a used crisp packet containing some water from the river Tamar!
Even with the point system, judging was made very difficult by the high standard of everyone’s efforts but eventually,
five ‘teams’ were chosen as winners. Everyone agreed, it was so much fun that winning didn’t really matter.
This looks set to be yet another event making a regular appearance on Plymouth MAG’s calendar and even MAG was a winner as we managed to raise £60 for the organisation.
