Ride for Combat Stress Wales and back the long way
On the 3rd May 2013 a group of bikers from all over the UK met up in Connah’s Quay, North Wales for a three day sponsored tour of Wales for the benefit of the military charity Combat Stress.
While the event was organised by Freemasons who are bikers, it was open to all, and about 40 bikes made the run. The tour started off from the Masonic Lodge at Connah’s Quay where they were waved off by Lord and Lady Barry Jones. The Bikers followed the coastline of North Wales, with a quick stop over in Anglesey, before continuing down the coast to Aberystwyth where they spent the night, also throwing an impromptu live music concert in the nearest pub to where they were staying.
The second day saw them continuing along the coast of Wales, visiting Swansea and
Cardiff where they met Falklands veteran Simon Weston. Then it was on to Brecon where they stopped for the second night, before heading north through Wales on the final leg of their tour, ending up where they started in Connah’s Quay, after a trip of 550 miles spread over three Days.
Between sponsorship, Lodge donations and the end of tour entertainment evening, over £15,500 was raised all of which went to Combat Stress since everyone taking part paid for their own petrol, food, and accommodation.
Combat Stress is the leading UK charity specialising in the care of veterans’ mental health. They are currently supporting just over 5,000 ex-Service men and women. This includes 637 who served in Iraq and 284 who served in Afghanistan. Neville Owens
Pubs with a purpose
It could be argued that all pubs have a fine purpose already but on a serious note here’s a pub with more. The Retreat on the A39 between Glastonbury and the M5 provides accommodation and help to ex servicemen The goal of the charity that the pub represents is to provide a post services facility funded by the pubs patrons. The beneficiaries are ex service personnel who have been discharged either medically, through post traumatic stress disorder or have just have given enough and need a helping hand into civilian life.
Retraining for new careers, by like-minded personnel who have been through what they have is the plan.
The facilities are planned to be self funding and will help service
MAG member Steph Jeavons is embarking upon a solo overland motorcycle journey around the world and raising money for charity Rally4Life.
On March 27 next year Steph will leave her home in North Wales and attempt to circumnavigate the globe, visiting at least 42 countries and hitting at least six continents. Steph aims to do this in under two years avoiding all motorways and main roads and living mainly in her two man tent with only the things she can carry on her bike. Steph’s current budget for the entire trip is just £10,000. This allows her just £5 a day for food, Steph will become the second woman in the UK to make this solo journey. Elspeth Beard did it 30 years ago with no mobile phones and Internet to keep her it touch with her loved ones back home!

The Bike A Honda CRF 250L Having test ridden it Steph reckons it’s equally at home on the road or on a dirt track. Having worked with Hondas in the past Steph recognises their reliability and durability. “If it does break down, the chances are it will be repairable and parts will be available. Honda’s build
quality is second-to-none. The model came out last year and no one has attempted to take it on such a journey before. I am looking forward to testing it out and showing what it is capable of.
It is lightweight and fairly low to the ground giving me the confidence to take it anywhere and know that if I get stuck, I can always drag it out. It has excellent fuel economy and with such a small budget I need that. It is powered by a single cylinder that provides useful power and torque across a wide rev range.
Luggage
I love the Kreiga products. They look good, they play hard and they just don't let you down. Kriega products are beautifully engineered by bikers for bikers and will handle mud, rain, desert or rainforests equally as well. The system I have chosen is an overland 30 which will fit on the Honda with no need for additional racking. I will have two 15 litre bags either side and a 30 litre on the top as pictured
