PROFILE Calmer Corn Heads ABOUT CALMER CORN HEADS

Marion Calmer is a farmer from western Illinois who has been doing independent, on-farm research since 1985. Through years of research, it became apparent that by growing corn in ultra-narrow rows, farmers could not only increase yields by 5%, but simultaneously reduce weed presence and erosion.

Ultra-narrow rows require narrow-row corn heads, so Calmer Corn Heads was born by manufacturing 15, 20 and 30 inch corn heads. In 2012, Calmer added 12 inch rows.

Another production area of Calmer Corn Heads is the Trash Reduction/Decomposition Kit for John Deere 40, 90, 600 series, Case-IH 2200 and 2400 series, and NH 96c, 98c, and 996 corn heads. Years of research went into the process of reducing trash and butt shell- ing, leaving the fi eld ready for the next year. Marion came up with the 3-step process that reduces trash and enables residue to decompose at a faster rate.

These steps are:

1. Install Calmer’s patented revolving, open-window BT “Chopping” or “Crushing” knife rolls. The rolls receive the stalk through the open window, then crush or chop the stalk many times eliminating the need of a chopping head or shredders.

2. Install Calmer’s 6-tooth gathering chain-drive sprockets and 9-tooth idlers. The smaller drive sprocket allows the stalk rolls to make additional revolutions, making more of the plant disappear below the stripper plate before the gathering chain lug can break it off.

3. Install Calmer’s beveled stripper plates. These beveled stripper plates match the curvature of the ear helping to eliminate butt shelling, and strip leaves and husks, which also reduces trash through the combine.

PRODUCTS • Harvesting Equipment: New Chopping Corn Heads, Trash Reduction Kits and Components

• Mowing & Shredding Equipment: Trash Reduction, Kits that crush, chop and ready the fi eld for stalk decomposition

• Replacment Parts: Trash Reduction Kits and components to repair and upgrade JD Corn Heads

• Home of the Calmer BT Chopper and BT Crusher!

The Calmer BT Chopper — better than a chopping head because these stalk rolls chop the stalk up into small pieces at the corn head without added field passes, extra gear boxes or parts. This new product is available for JD 40, 90, and 600 series, NH 96c, 98c, and 996 series, and Case 2200 and 2400 series corn heads.

Several components make up Calmer’s Trash Reduction/Decomposition Kit for Deere corn heads.
