Pennies From Heaven Operation Roundup celebrates $1 million in donations

electric bill to the next dollar and donate the difference to charity. The effort, known as Operation Roundup, recently celebrated a significant milestone: As of July 1, the program has distributed over $1 million to numerous nonprofit groups and individuals.

"This is something every co-op member should feel very good about," said Jim Jackson, Kiamichi Electric CEO. "This money helps local charities, organizations and individuals right here at home."

Operation Roundup was created to provide funding for local communities, organizations and families in need. Each month the extra nickels and dimes donated by co-op members flow into a fund managed by an independent board of directors. The board reviews funding applications and makes decisions based on need.

Over the years the program has helped feed senior citizens, repaired playground equipment, awarded college scholarships to scores of local teens, and provided financial aid to families and individuals who needed specialized medical equipment and other necessities.

Currently, 16, 104 Kiamichi Electric members participate in Operation Roundup. While co-op members may opt out of the program at any time, Jackson said most don't.

"The pennies, nickels and dimes

contributed individually wouldn't accomplish much, but when it's multiplied across the membership, it becomes real money that can truly make a difference."

Predicting the Next

Over the years, Operation Roundup funds have helped 45 volunteer fire departments purchase much needed fire fighting equipment. Forty local schools have defibrillators on hand at all school events, thanks to Operation Roundup, while Coats for Kids uses Roundup funds to purchase winter coats for needy children.

When a tornado plowed through Yanush in 2008 destroying numerous homes, and high waters flooded out 21 families in Haw Creek this year, Operation Roundup provided $29,000 to help residents get back on their feet.

"The average participant contributes around $5 per year to Operation Roundup," he said. "The pennies, nickels and dimes contributed individually wouldn't accomplish much, but when it's multiplied across the membership, it becomes real money that can truly make a difference."

About 250 electric cooperatives nationwide support similar Operation Roundup programs in their local areas. All told, members of rural electric co- ops have raised more than $100 million since the idea was started by a South Carolina electric co-op in 1989.

If you’re one of the Kiamichi Electric members who make Operation Round Up possible, thank you for your support.
