“A lot of the dogs and cats we saw were outside during the storm, so they were more vulnerable,” Dugat said. Holbrook mentioned a unique situation that he experienced with a couple of the larger animals. Two of the horses that were brought in for treatment showed significant signs of stress when the next round of storms came through Stillwater.

“You see storm anxiety in dogs a lot, but not so much in the larger animals,” Holbrook said.

For Emily Messner, a senior at OSU, the emotion she saw when speak- ing with a woman who had lost everything in the tornado was a moving experience.

“She had a long road of rebuilding ahead of her, and I could tell that knowing her dog was in good hands was one less thing she had to worry about,” Messner said. “That was the highlight of the relief effort for me—helping both the animals and the people who love them.” A disaster presents unique teaching and learning opportunities that are difficult—if not impossible—to replicate.

“My students got to help with things they’ve never experienced before and they learned so much that you just can’t teach in this hospital set- ting,” Dugat said.

One of those students was Brian Herrin, a senior at OSU. He was responsible for treating one patient in particular who had multiple severe wounds and a great attitude.
