T e OEC Foundation, meeting weekly since the fi rst week of June, is helping families recover from the devastating twisters that swept through OEC’s service the last week of May. In seven weeks’ time, the Foundation board has granted more than $86,200 in tornado relief to nearly 60 families— including those who lost loved ones. An additional $30,000 is in the hands of the local chapter of the American Red Cross for local disaster aid. “Many tornado victims are facing a variety of challenges as they try to put the pieces of their lives back together and prepare to start over,” said Vivian Gibson, president of the OEC Foundation board. “T ese people have not only lost their material possessions, but everything that was “normal” in life—daily routines, neighbors, and neighborhoods. It’s all gone. We’re just trying to give them something from which they can begin rebuilding their lives.” According to

Gibson, most of the grants have covered insurance deductibles for cash-strapped families, materials for home repairs, and appliances. “We’re seeing a number of families who were under insured,” she said. In addition to tornado relief grants, the Foundation board awarded $24,725 to nine local organizations and seven individuals during regular business meetings in June and July. Of that, $8,500 will provide school supplies to Norman, Noble, Lexington, Little Axe, and Robin Hill schoolchildren in very-low and low income households, and $5,000 will
