Climax Studios’ CEO Simon Gardner tells MCV about the firm’s partnership with Sony working on the PS4
Tell us about your company for those who are unfamiliar with your services.
Climax is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year as an independent UK developer. We develop for all platforms including mobile and provide management and engineering consultancy work for publishers and other developers. We have five teams working in the studio on a range of projects that include ports, client IP and original Climax IP.
What is your biggest success so far this year?
Critically it would be our Steam and PC retail version of Castlevania Ultimate Editionthat we developed in collaboration with Konami UK and Mercury Steam. Our guys did a really good job of making it run at 60fps in HD across a wide range of PCs.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date? It would probably be Silent Hill Shattered Memorieson the Wii. The studio tried to do something different with that game and it was great to get recognition for the risk we took from some of the highly regarded review sites. It was probably held back from a wider audience by being on the Wii, but it was brave of Konami to support us in trying to bring more mature games to that platform.
What do you hope to achieve in 2013?
We have already done it. We wanted to begin work on the new consoles and we have two PS4
We have been working with Sony on the social and app capabilities of the PS4.
“ Simon Gardner, Climax Studios
games and one Xbox One title in development for our clients.
Do you have any exciting developments in the works? We have been working closely with Sony on the social and app capabilities of PS4 and I think we are one of the most experienced developers in this on console.
Any plans for expansion/new partnerships?
We expect a bit of organic growth as we move into the next phase of the new console life cycle. We are working with a mocap studio on something a little bit different and this could lead to some exciting developments.
