well as for the more than 260 other people who were present, including active-duty members of the armed forces and their families and other volunteers. Altogether, thirty-four Elks volunteered to assist at the stand down and arrived there that morning bright and early and full of the energy needed to serve so many meals. During the stand down, attendees, including homeless veterans and members of the armed forces and their families, were also given access to medical care, employment opportunities, information about housing programs, and various supplies. “Helping homeless veterans is everyone’s responsibility,” says Eugene Lodge Secy. Raymond Stice. “The suc- cess of this grant is simply being able to contribute to their welfare.”

Gratitude Grant for Strengthening Youth

Knowing that the future of stronger communities starts with youth, the Durango, Colorado, Lodge used its $2,000 ENF Gratitude Grant to help with a nine-day community Safety Town program for children ages five to seven. During the course of the program, participants learned about community safety issues, like the importance of care- fully crossing streets and train tracks, and how to navigate local streets. Elks pitched in during the event by repairing various types of equipment and donating helmets for use during the traffic safety portion of the program, in which the children pedaled small, four- wheel vehicles along the streets of a mock town.

“Our involvement with Safety Town shows how the Elks serve all members of our community,” says Project Manager Kim Nemecek. “It shows that we are working to make our community a better place.” Applications for ENF Gratitude Grants are due May 31. Don’t let your lodge miss an opportunity to obtain $2,000 that it can use to serve your community.
