You take a walk for that surprise around the corner. It might be a dreamy cottage garden in the Cotswolds or sun-washed red rocks in Bryce Canyon. Or a moment that puts you squarely in the sandals of a pilgrim 500 years ago in Tuscany, when you come over a rise and suddenly see the 14 irregular stone towers of San Gimignano on the horizon, the foreground a crazy quilt of wheat fields and cypress and poppies. If you glimpsed archangels on the wing over this medieval Manhattan, it would be only slightly improved. You’ve traveled back in time and all because you’ve gone for a good walk.


On many days, a Wayfarers walk offers a major site, an important cathedral or beautiful manor houses that you’ll see on a private tour. Other times your day will be filled with streams and green hills and enormous blue skies in one of the most spectacularly beautiful landscapes in the world – in England, France, Italy, New Zealand, or a dozen other locations. That’s reward enough. You walk because it’s a chance to see the countryside and villages in all their variety. From a train, car, or even a bicycle, the Italian country- side can be a pleasant blur. On foot, you pass through fields of wild- flowers and listen to a guide point out purple Mediterranean pea, the pink convolvulus, and fodder vetch that made it appear as if confetti had been strewn in the tall grass. You hear the sound of church bells long before you see the church,
