France ~ The Dordogne
Long before it was famous for gastronomic delicacies such as foie gras, truffles, and wine, the breathtaking Dordogne region was home to Cro-Magnon Man, one of the earliest modern humans. Discover 15,000 years of history as we walk in one of France's most beautiful and unspoiled regions, setting off from Les Eyzies-de- Tayac to admire prehistoric cave paintings, visit medieval castles and wonder at fairytale châteaux. At Les Milandes, the former home of 1930s music-hall queen Josephine Baker, we enjoy lunch and a display of falconry. On this trip we also take a cruise along the Dordogne River, explore impossibly charming cliffside villages, dine in majestic surroundings, and marvel at the fascinating history and fertile farmland around us.
France ~ Alsace
Though it lies across the Rhine from Germany, and can look and sound Teutonic at times, Alsace is a passionately patriotic region and the birthplace of the French national anthem. Even so, centuries of shifting borders has infused Alsace with a singular culture and viticulture. The result is unsurpassed diversity, from fairy-tale landscapes, pastel- painted villages, and Europe's highest concentration of feudal castles to a distinctive Franco- Germanic fusion cuisine. During this moderate 5-day/6-night itinerary, we walk part of the famous Alsace Wine Trail, visit a medieval fortress with spectacular views of Germany’s Black Forest, and trek along undu- lating forest tracks near Obernai and the Vosges Mountains, wining and dining along the way, enjoying the finest produce this fascinating area has to offer.
