to the level of fitness required. Some walking tour itineraries are quite easy with relatively short distances and generally level ground. On other trips, you may encounter many staircases or steep hills or rocky trails.

To get the most out of your experience, we recommend that you choose an itinerary that matches your personal fitness level. Or, select an itinerary that is a bit challenging and set a goal to get in shape before you leave for your dream vacation. A few months before your trip, consider beginning a light training regimen to boost your endurance, strength, and balance. By increasing your fitness level, you’ll be able to participate more enthusiastically and, more importantly, you’ll enjoy your walk to the fullest. Here are some training tips to get you ready for the trip of your lifetime:

Recommended Pre-Trip Training Endurance Stair Walking: One-two times per week Start out by walking for five minutes up and down a flight of stairs or bleachers. Every week, increase five minutes until you work up to 30 minutes of stair walking.

Challenge: After one month, insert intervals where you climb two stairs at a time. Always take single stairs when descending.
