the van will magically appear with refreshments. More ups and downs along the trail, past farms and cottages, and then sometime around noon, there will be lunch. For an hour or so, you’ll enjoy a pub or a trattoria or a café, depending upon where you are walking. In the afternoon, it’s more hills, more dales, more views. It will be punctuated with a surprise visit from the van. You’ll reach the new hotel in the late afternoon, where a little stretching of the hamstrings is probably a good idea. You have time to explore a new town or village or do a little shopping. Back at the hotel, a hot bath is a good idea to get rid of the day’s kinks. Then you meet the group for a dinner with local fare and perhaps local wines. That’s followed by one of the deepest sleeps you’ve had in ages. On some Walks such as New Zealand, where the distances are greater, you can expect some longer van transfers between hotels. Walks with a challenge rating of ‘one’ or ‘two’ have less walking to allow time for engaging with a cultural theme. Other Walks, such as Pentillie Castle, you stay in one memorable location for the entire week. Then you set off to explore different areas in the vicinity each day.
Your Fellow Walkers Those smiling faces in new Gore-Tex jackets and hiking boots? There’s every chance that these people will become your new friends over the course of the next week. Well traveled and well educated, they are eager to explore and experience the world -- not drive through it at 55 mph. They share your love of nature, adventurous outlook, and a convivial, welcoming spirit.
