Zinc flake technology for wind energy

There’s no better way to

approach this exciting emerging market!

A 4.G92

Fasteners for wind energy plants, especially for offshore applications, have to meet the highest requirements regarding corrosion protection and mounting. Since hydrogen embrittlement during the coating process presents no risk of weakening the steel, zinc flake systems are perfectly suited for high tensile steel fasteners as used in the wind energy industry.

totech Deutschland GmbH, based in Berlin, says that it is able to provide leading zinc flake technology to ensure best assembly and protection properties with sustainable products. Several wind energy OEMs such

as AREVA and REpower, have already approved Atotech’s zinc flake systems to protect their critical fasteners. Atotech’s zinc flake technology offers flexible systems that

and Techseal®

can be modularly adapted to various requirements (corrosion resistance, coefficient of friction and colour), with no risk of hydrogen embrittlement during the coating process. The zinc flake processes that Atotech can offer for wind energy applications includes Zintek® 200, Zintek® .

400 Zintek® 200 is a standard base coat that Atotech says offers

excellent corrosion protection. The coating thickness by spray application is 6µm - 12µm depending on corrosion protection requirements, and Zintek®

200 is

compatable with all Techseal® top coat products. Zintek® 400 is a zinc flake system for

spray application containing a special binder system. Zintek®

400 is paintable and powder coatable and protects against corrosion

creep. In combination with the cross-linker Zintek® CL very low drying

temperature (30°C - 150°C), as well as self-curing at room temperature, is possible. Techseal®

is a range of CR(VI) free

organic top coats that include water based and solvent based versions, as well as being available with integrated lubricant for defined coefficient of friction values. Different colours such as silver, black, blue and green are also available.
