gategroup awarded contracts with United

gategroup has unveiled three-year contracts totalling more than CHF 430 million in revenue with United, the world’s largest carrier by traffic.

This award was part of a tender that covered the majority of United’s contracts with gategroup brand Gate Gourmet. Gate Gourmet renewed more than 90 percent of its contracted revenue on tender. The contracts include extensions in catering and provisioning service at three of United’s core connecting hubs at Chicago O’Hare, San Francisco and Washington Dulles, as well as additional volumes in San Francisco and Washington Dulles.

In addition to the three hub locations, Gate Gourmet will continue to provide services to United in spoke cities Columbus, Jacksonville, New Orleans, and San Antonio. The agreements take effect Jan. 1, 2013, and run through December 2015.

“We are pleased to extend our long-standing relationship with United Airlines as a strategic partner and look forward to continuing our work with them,” said Andrew Gibson, gategroup CEO. www.gategroup.com

Helios gets Virgin Atlantic kitted out

Virgin Atlantic’s new Upper Class cabin amenity kit supplied by Helios has been six months in the making. Its green credentials include the use of rPET*, a sustainable material made from crushed plastic bottles and a design that enables the passenger to double up use as a tablet or e-reader case for use when travelling. On inbound flights, the kit takes the form of a travel wallet. VA’s Premium Economy kit, also made from rPET*, is dark grey with a silver silk lining. This kit also doubles up as a travel wallet when back on the ground. The Economy kit includes revamped eyeshades featuring six different sunglasses designs. Passengers can collect a different set each time they fly and wear their special version of Kanye West’s Shutter Shades or Rayban’s Wayfarers whilst they sleep. Said Paul Sands, head of customer experience management for Virgin Atlantic: “Our new kits have been designed with a reusable factor in mind and we are hoping to see them being carried around by passengers once they reach their destination. So many of our customers travel with tablet computers these days so we wanted to take note of this and offer a solution for transporting them on board and back at home.

“Over the years, we’ve given out millions of amenity kits and you’d be surprised where they turn up - they really do have a life of their own after they leave the aircraft. www.virginatlantic.com www.helios-mppd.nl
