Trust with what would be £500,000 in today’s money. He received honours from the Monarch, recognition by the elite and the gratitude of families who had safe housing and sanitation for the first time. His kindness has a life far longer than

that of one man – today, long aſter he is capable of deriving anything at all, the Abbey’s 2,000-strong congregation of Peabody Trust staff and residents is still benefitting from George’s generosity. But philanthropy isn’t about scale – every

act of kindness counts towards the collective good. Elsewhere in this publication you can read about the Powerlist Foundation which provides a more modest example of practical benevolence. A group of Powerlisters

decided that while we were proud to see our names and accomplishments in lights, it was only worth something if we could use it as a force for good. We met, put our hands in our pockets and launched an annual Leadership Programme for some 40 young people. Next year we hope to be granted a licence to run a Sixth Form Free School in one of London’s less advantaged boroughs. We are giving our time, expertise and

money to improve the lives of strangers. Not because the Government have told us to, nor because we feel guilty about our relative advantages, but because we each get a kick out of seeing the careers of tomorrow’s leaders getting a turbocharge from us.

So next time that you read in a newspaper

that some person or company has made a donation to a good cause, ignore the cynics who accuse them of having selfish motives. Not because they’re wrong, but because they’ve totally missed the point. We’re all selfish. Te only question is

whether the effect of our actions is to the advantage of society or not – and if they are, applaud them as loudly as we sang Te Battle Hymn of the Republic at George Peabody’s 150th memorial service! Finally, if you haven’t tried any

philanthropy of your own yet – it’s never too late to start becoming practically benevolent. And you’ll be surprised just how good it makes you feel – I’ll bet on it!
