5

Damon stepped down from the chairmanship of Permira in June 2010 to focus on deals, rather than running the firm, but he is still regarded as a baron of the private equity space. Te 50-year-old, who grew up on a council estate in Leicester and headed one of Europe’s biggest private equity firms focuses a lot more of his time on his charity work nowadays. He is chair and co-founder of the Social Business Trust, an investment fund that offers grants and pro bono support to social enterprises to enable them to grow. Damon persuaded six corporates, Bain& Company, Clifford Chance, Ernst & Young, Permira and Tomson Reuters to commit £20m to the scheme. SBT has made six investments so far. Damon is also a main board member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and a trustee of the Royal Anniversary Trust, which administers Te Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education. In September 2012 he was appointed to the Board of Governors at Te Wellcome Trust. During his time as chair at Permira, the company’s funds under his management grew from £1bn to £21bn. Damon was personally responsible for developing Permira’s buyout strategy, funding and new business.
