St. Louis/Collinsville, Illinois RPM This may seem like short notice but

the following has been previously an- nouced and this issue will be out a cou- ple of weeks before the event. The 2012 St. Louis Railroad Proto-

type Modeler’s Meet is at the Gateway Convention Center, One Gateway Dri- ve, Collinsville, IL 62234, on July 27 and 28. Collinsville is a pleasant com- munity about a dozen miles east of St. Louis. The 10,000-square foot conven- tion center is a very attractive, fairly new facility just off I-55/I-70 and I-255 and is well suited for the meet. Selected vendors and a number of historical soci- eties will be there, and two solid days of seminars are on the docket. Several na- tionally-known speakers are on the list, as are hands-on sessions with several of the hobby’s best “weathering warriors.” (That seems to be an appropriate term.) The talks cover both modeling and hi- torical railroad subjects. Admission is $20.00 for two days,

$15.00 for Saturday only, and the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sales end Saturday at 5:00. Last year there were over 1,000 models in the display room with many works-in-progress. They have the space, so let’s make it one-thousand and more something this year. Don’t come empty handed. This spot is easy to get to from a lot

of the central U.S., and you can find a variety of hotels nearby. For more in- formation, contact John Golden, e-mail Golden1014@yahoo.com, phone 812- 929-7181; or Lonnie Bathurst at Bathurst@litchfieldil.com, phone 217- 556-0314; or Dan Kohlberg, e-mail paducah@mindspring.com. Be there!

2012 Steel Mill Modelers’ Meet August 30-September 2 are the

dates for this year’s Steel Mill Model- ers’ Meet. One of the best things about the hobby in recent years is how spe- cial theme events like this have grown. Taking the words right from the press release, “The meet is designed to be of interest to all levels of modelers and steel mill enthusiasts.” Its true. I have been to seminars presented by some of the modelers who are speaking and can verify that anyone who attends the meet will get a lot out of it. The event is at the Crowne Plaza

Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J., (Philadel- phia area) and the $99.00 registration includes the famous buffet style “Mill Hunkie Banquet” of pierogies, keil- basa, saurerkraut and all. Presenta- tions start Thursday evening, so get there before dinner. Seminars will go all day Friday, steel theme layout tours on Saturday, then more talks on Sunday morning. Go to the website for Peach Creek

Shops, peachcreekshops.com, for a complete run-down, and contact the hotel for its special event rate.— W.C.S. 92

The Reading hauled a lot of steel from the Lukens Steel Coatesville (PA) plant, and Will Jamison brought several examples of cars in this service to Collinsville. RDG 33194 is a Sunshine O-63 fixed-end gon kit in HO scale, a class identical to cars bought by the Reading. It is equipped with a rack for carrying oversize sheet steel and has decals from the RT&HS. The rack is made following a company diagram, but Will says he has never found two exactly alike. He also showed a reworked Bachmann coil gon. The car came with a clamshell hood, but for this model he followed a B&LE diagram and scratchbuilt a new one from styrene bent over formers, gluing as the styrene was bent a little at a time. The car has new Tichy ladders and steps, Details West draft gear, and Plano crossover walks. The decals are Champ (not now available) and the weathering, craft store acrylics.

This S scale work in progress is by Pieter Roos and will become a KCS rebuilt USRA 40- foot box (note the gussets and rivets on the new side sill). The American Models post- war car had the correct body, but he removed and replaced the door tracks and hard- ware. The fishbelly underframe is from an S Helper car, the ladders from Grandt Line. Jerry Glow decals will be used on the model, which follows a March, 2009, RMC article by Greg Martin uses prototype data from an April, 1992,

article by Joe Pen-

nington. FGEX 51237 is an S Helper car with the roof removed and replaced by a resin casting for a Hutchins type roof. Pieter gathered the information and had the roof cast. Other changes include modifications to the side sill and weathering over factory paint.

Mainline Modeler

This trio of Union R.R. MP15’s is a reminder that the Steel Mill Modeler’s Meet is coming in late August. Joe Tonkin detailed and painted these HO units, and the photo was taken on the Magarac Steel & Iron diorama by John Glaab. The background is a print forced to simu- late the heat distortion of a hot summer day. John used Helicon Focus® to get the greater depth of field here. This is a computer program that merges “stepped focus” photographs.
