ry installed, as well as Walthers Pro- toMAX® couplers. Also included are two packages of small add-on parts includ- ing cover plates for the pilot, engineer and firemen and rear coupler cut lever. This is the first new locomotive from Walthers to be equipped with a Sound- traxx Tsunami sound system for use with d.c. and DCC control systems. The system operated well in both d.c. and DCC mode, but it should be noted that the operation does differ from pre- vious Proto 2000 locomotives equipped with the QSI system. In DCC mode the normal functions including headlight, horn and bell, as well as a “short” oper- ation of the horn, brake squeal, coupler clank and engine exhaust are present. One previously operation, the speed announcement is not present in the Soundtraxx equipped locomotives. When operating the locomotives in

the d.c. mode, the instructions note that the use of older rheostat type and pulse type d.c. power supplies may not pro- vide correct performance. The use of a “high quality electronically control pow- er pack, preferably one that supplies smooth, filtered d.c. power” is recom- mended. In the d.c. mode the board is factory set to provide forward (two short blasts), reverse (three short blasts) and stop (one short blast) horn signals auto-

matically as the locomotive starts or stops. An additional function, a grade crossing signal, can be programmed to operate upon application of a sudden spike in the track voltage. Of particular importance to modelers who have the Walthers or QSI add-on control module for d.c. power supplies is that the Soundtraxx locomotive will not respond to the proprietary QSI d.c. control mod- ule functions. As indicated, our sample ran well

right out of the box in both d.c. and DCC modes. Slow speed operation was very smooth, with motion occurring in throttle step 1 in both the 28 and 128 step modes. When first selected in DCC mode, the unit goes through a start-up sequence which includes separate start- ing of the two 12-567 prime movers. As with other dual mode d.c./DCC de-

coders, it is necessary to apply several volts of track power to energize the sound system. When the proper voltage level is reached, the locomotive will go through the double start-up sequence. Further advancing of the throttle will cause the locomotive to begin moving in the forward or reverse direction, accom- panied by the indicative sounding of the horn. Backing down on the throttle will slow the locomotive to a stop. Careful adjustment of the throttle is required to
