keep from dropping below the threshold for energizing the sound system. Drop- ping below this point will cause the sound system to shut down. The E8A’s are an excellent lead en-
gine for Pennsy passenger trains. The E8A locomotives are available as sin- gle units or as A-A combinations. Both d.c. only and sound equipped dual mode (d.c./DCC) versions are offered. The price for the E8 A unit is $259.98. Consult Walthers or your local Walthers hobby dealer for current availability.– KEN BREHER

ern style steel caboose in the “Silver Series” line of rolling stock. These models are well above the standard train-set, toy-like rolling stock models that one might think they are. The ca- booses are offered in Lehigh Valley, Reading, Western Maryland, Maine Central, Norfolk & Western and paint- ed/unlettered versions. The Bachmann caboose is based on a standard version of the Northeastern caboose. Each rail- road had their own little details added to their cabooses so the Bachmann ver- sion, while maybe not a hundred per- cent correct for each railroad, is very close to each one. The Northeastern caboose was never officially referred to by that name. The caboose was initially designed by the Reading Railroad in the early 1920’s, and the design was based on the USRA plans which replaced the wood sided body with an all-steel body. This success- ful design was adopted by several rail- roads in the Northeast region and the caboose became a common sight in that particular area. It was only natural that the name “Northeastern Style Caboose”
