straight and curved trackage and the flat side is used on switches and other special track-work. The grooves corre- spond to the rail spacing for the three indicated scales. The Rescue pads are used for removing heavy accumulations of dirt and grime, as well as providing some burnishing effect on rough spots on the rail surfaces. The Maintenance Pads are used to perform routine clean- ing of the trackage. The Cleaning Pads are utilized in conjunction with the Tidy Tracks Track Cleaning Solution. The moistened pads are pushed across the rails to remove heavy deposits of lubri- cants and dirt. The Finishing Pads are for cleaning up any residue left behind after cleaning the track. Two of the pads are snapped onto the cleaning head and are then pushed across the rails to clean the running sur- faces. When the grooved sides are used, the pads slide along the rails and the pivoting cleaning head will turn to follow the curvature of the track. In small, lim- ited access areas the pivoting cleaning head can be disconnected from the han- dle and used in a hand-held fashion. The second major item is the Roto

The Dust Monkey is a small fiber pad mounted to a molded plastic mounting system that attaches to the axle of a freight or passenger car truck. It glides along the track, picking up dirt and dust from the top of the rails. For those who are accustomed to and
Wheel Cleaner® , available for HO and N scale models. It is used to clean the wheels of locomotives and rolling stock and consists of a molded plastic base with stops on each end. A plug-in con- nector is supplied with alligator clips and two types of cleaning strips called Roto Pads. One is a soft fiber material, the other has fine fingers for removing heavy build-up of dirt and grime on the wheels. These cleaning pads fit into grooves in the top of the base. The system can be used on both d.c.
and DCC power systems. Three con- nection options are available for clean- ing locomotive wheels. The simplest in- volves a set of built-in contacts on the bottom of the base which make electri- cal contact when the base is placed on the powered rails. A second alternate is to attach the plug-in connector to the base and clip the alligator clips to the rails. The last option involves connect- ing the alligator clips directly to the output terminals of the power supply. Turning up the power will cause the lo- comotive wheels to turn against the cleaning pads.
prefer the use of an abrasive track cleaning bar, Woodland Scenics offers the Rail Pal®, a two sided, flexible abrasive pad for removing paint, dirt and other contaminants from the rails. It measures 1¹/₈″×3¹/₈″, has two differ- ent grades of abrasive. Its flexibility al- lows you to bear down and apply pres- sure where needed when polishing away the defects and contaminants. The final offering in the current product line are the Track Painters. These permanent paint marking pens are offered in three colors: Steel Rail, Rusty Rail and Weathered Tie and are used to color the ties and sides of the rails to increase the level of realism. Each comes with an extra fiber appli- cation point. To use the pens you insert the fiber application point and press in on the point until the paint flows into the fiber tip. Once saturated, the paint is applies to the rails or ties as with any other paint pen. The Tidy Tracks product line offers a
wide range of track maintenance prod- ucts to help the modeler clean and maintain his or her track and rolling stock. These products definitely war- rant a good look when it comes time to do a little clean-up around the rail- road. The Rail Tracker is priced at $34.99; the Rescue, Maintenance and Finishing pads are $6.99 each. The Ro- tary Wheel Cleaner in N scale is $24.99 and in HO scale is $29.99. Ro- tary pads for the Cleaner are $7.99. The N scale Dust Monkey is priced at $8.99 and the HO version is $9.99. The Rail Pads for these are $6.99.
