Chicago Railroad Fair In the April, 2012 RMC, Keith Wills


wrote in COLLECTOR CONSIST, “I do not have enough information to know the entire scope of the Chicago Railroad Fair or if it included an operating lay- out of any scale. Can a reader fill in this gap?” This reader attended the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1948 and 1949. Both years the Eastern Railroads sponsored a joint exhibit. It may have been un- derwritten by the Eastern Railroads Presidents Conference as at the Inter- national 1939 to 1940 New York World’s Fair. A large O scale layout in Chicago featured rolling stock lettered for all of the sponsoring railroads. I be- lieve the layout was Baltimore & Ohio owned (“It was.” KEITH WILLS). If so, the B&O provided it at the Chicago Rail- road Fair to show off its own freight and passenger trains as well as those of its competitors. The only other scale model train I recall at that long ago fair was an O scale streamliner herald- ed as the new Empire Builder operat- ing in the Great Northern-Burlington-


Ice house plans David Lambert’s article “Ice and the railroads, Pt. III: railroad ice houses” states that he is unaware of any ice house plans published by historical soci- eties or in railfan books. The Burlington Historical Society publication Burling- ton Bulletin, No. 12, page 51 published plans for the CB&Q standard 250-ton ice house in Wendover, Wyoming. The plans are dated October 11, 1922. This should be of interest to Mr. Lambert. The subject of Burlington Bulletin


No. 12 is CB&Q reefers and there is a wealth of information on car types used in refrigerator, heater, and venti- lator service. The publication includes a complete roster of Burlington Route and subsidiaries C&S and FW&D equipment from 1898 to 1970. This in- cludes the National Car Co. between 1949 to 1970 and Burlington Refriger- ator Express insulated boxcars from 1957 to 1970.

Weed killer That was a wonderful article on the


TCC weed killer in the April, RMC. I have however a question. How did they load the chemicals into the tubes? I didn’t see any filler caps, etc. in the photos or drawings.

There’s that little pipe on top, but it


sure looks small for filling all those tanks. We did not find a photo of the other side. We wish we could answer this for sure. So far the best guess is that the plumbing towards the left and just above the running board was used to fill the cars tanks.—EDITORS
