riod, locomotives of the mid-nineteenth century were often ornately painted and lettered. Unfortunately, history has all but hidden these colorful liver- ies from us. The Pennsylvania Railroad adopted a painting standard in 1868, which the author covers, as well as practices in the years leading up to it. There is even a recipe for the dark green used on the locomotives in the mid-1870’s–it starts with seven pounds of Swedish Green and ends with 27 books of gold leaf. Rounding out the coverage is a chap-
ter on locomotive numbering, the Loco- motive Register corrected to January 1, 1874 (included with the later are nu- merous locomotive drawings and pho- tographs), seven appendices covering a variety of topics, notes on sources, a bibliography, an index and footnotes. cides with the beginning of photog- raphy, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author was able to find so many excellent pictures to accompany the text. Historians and modelers will be pleased with the fine photo reproduction and the drawings that are included.
By 1874, the final year covered in
this book, locomotives had begun to take on a look that we recognize. The preceeding years, however, were filled with many different types of locomo- tives from a variety of builders, all built to meet the challenges of the day. Some succeeded, many did not. It was an interesting time in railroading, and on the PRR in particular. Locomotives of the Pennsylvania Railroad Volume 1, The Early Years, 1848 to 1874, does an admirable job in recounting many of the developments that took place in the evolution of the steam locomotive on the PRR during this often overlooked era (and one that seems ripe for the attention of those interested in historical modeling). Un- fortunately, the author, Richard D. Adams, died before he could see his ef- forts in print. However, thanks to the PRRT&HS and member Gary Rauch, who prepared the manuscript for publi- cation, we can all share in Richard Adams’ scholarly research. This is a vol- ume the author could be proud of. I’m glad that the PRRT&HS brought it to fruition.–CHRIS D’AMATO
