the layout would take. All we needed on the templates were the track center lines and the outlines of the templates’ shapes. We also kept the individual template labels (A, B, C, etc.) and the sheet numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) with the files and printed them on the pieces. It was simple to create usable templates by copying both the track center lines and template outlines onto their re- spective sheets. I repeated the process for each sheet of plywood. We only needed black and white prints for this step, which saved us the expense of col- or printing. The drawings were done at a scale of

³/₄″ = 1′-0″ and needed to be made full size, so I enlarged the page size of the files and all the graphic elements by 16 times (1,600 percent) for actual-size (12″ = 1′-0″) print outs. Everything was con- verted to black or grayscale, as well. I

The full sized print (top) is laid down on a sheet of plywood. Next, a portion of the print is cut out with a hobby knife (above). At least a half inch of extra paper should be left along the edges of the templates to outline them and keep the cutting lines in- tact. Carpenter’s glue is then applied to the where the print section is located on the plywood (below) and the template is glued down in the correct spot on the sheet.

made the roadbed outlines .0556″ wide and the track center lines .0278″ wide to ensure that the lines were clear on the full-size prints. The finished CorelDraw files were saved as .PDF files using CorelDraw’s integral option.
