JEDDAH MASTERPLAN

Tourism Initiatives In order to drive Jeddah’s move from a transit city and commercial gateway to a destination of choice for international, regional and domestic tourists, the

Jeddah Plan outlines several initiatives, including: l Upgrade Jeddah’s existing cultural, heritage and leisure attractions and create new ones

l Create tourism routes or heritage trails through the old city with tourist activity and rest points

l Upgrade and revitalise the Jeddah Corniche l Improve intercity transport services from Jeddah l Improve public transport linkages into and around Jeddah l Provide essential visitor facilities in key tourist areas l Develop tourism awareness and marketing campaigns l Facilitate tourist visas

As part of the Plan, JDURC is currently redeveloping the city’s North Corniche, scheduled to be completed in 2014. “Te 12 kilometre Northern Corniche is a favourite leisure destination for Jeddah’s residents. Te area’s redevelopment will see a vibrant new waterfront area emerge with spaces that enhance the urban structure and create distinctive new architectural and aesthetic elements, pedestrian areas and a range of leisure and recreational facilities,” JDURC said. According to the JDURC, the development will also attract many tourism and leisure related investment opportunities including marinas, restaurants, commercial and retail outlets. A large number of international hospitality groups are currently planning major

hotel developments in Jeddah and the Municipality aims to facilitate further private development by investing in supporting facilities and public amenities. Te expansion of King Abdul Aziz International Airport, the development of the Haramain high-speed railway connecting Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah as well as the improvement of docking facilities at Jeddah Islamic Port allowing cruise ship arrivals, all contribute to the larger vision of Jeddah in becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination on a global scale as well as a modern city offering a high quality of life to its citizens l
