Schaumburg, IL — RSF Elektronik has released a slim profile linear encoder series MSA 700 and 800, using what the company describes as innovative new design. Sources explain it is tailor-made for metrology applications that require protection from contamination. Typical applica- tions for these encoders are optical comparators, and video and vision systems. The main advantages offered by the encoders are generous mounting tolerances, low level back- lash and optimized thermal behavior. Central to the innovative design

of the series MSA 700 and 800 encoders is the reading carriage and reading head connected by a wear- free and maintenance-free magnetic coupling. The carriage is also con- strained by a magnet guide that affects the ferromagnetic tapes on the extrusion. Hence, there are no

forces that stress guide parts and no contact points that can wear prema- turely. Improving upon old roller bearing or spring coupled encoders, the new magnetic coupling and guide provides even pressure along the measuring length. This allows for generous mounting tolerances with-

out any negative influence on accura- cy. An additional benefit of this mag- netic coupling is the extremely low backlash, reducing one of the main weaknesses of sealed encoders. The fiber-reinforced sealing

lips, made of fluororubber (Viton), are wear and coolant resistant, allowing the encoder to operate in harsh environments. High velocities are also possible due to the high degree of rigidity and ideally formed blade area of the reading head. The scale itself is fastened

minum. Thus, a reproducible ther- mal growth is ensured by symmetri- cal expansion or shortening of the scale to the profile. Expansion differences be tween

the aluminum profile and machine slide are accommodated by flexible fastening elements. The new incremental linear

encoders have grating pitches of 20, 10, and 8 microns, and come in accuracies of 2, 3 and 5 microns. They can be cus-

tomized to suit customer specifications. Contact: Heidenhain Corp., 333

Transformers

Shelton, CT — Bridgeport Magnetics Group Inc. now offers an isolation transformer to eliminate stray volt- ages in metal pole streetlights which may be high enough to cause bodily harm and injury when touched by humans or animals. Such stray volt- ages may be the result of wear and tear on the insulation of wiring and components caused by damage, tam- pering or aging. Several thousands of the transformers have already been installed in New York City.

Other applications that benefit

from installing the streetlight isola- tion transformer and increase public safety include parking lots, sports complexes, traffic lights, marinas, kiosks, and other line powered items using metal poles in public areas. The special isolation transformers are available in three standard power ratings: 1200, 2200 and 8000VA. Other power ratings are available as custom designs. Stan - dard input and output voltages are 120V/120V. Other voltages are avail- able options for 60Hz as well as 50Hz operating frequencies. To prevent overload, each trans-

former has an internal auto-reset- table thermal switch. The trans- former is embedded in black epoxy in a red resin container with carrying handle and is 100 percent water- proof. The container is secured with a single bolt through a center hole. The dimensions and weight for the 1200VA rated transformer are (OD x height) 7.75 x 3.75-in. (196 x 96mm)

and 16-lbs (7.2kg). Contact: Bridgeport Magnetics
