The CRF Institute listed some of Unilever’s Reasons for Excellence as: international careers; successful work-life balance due to a flexible working environment; and as having a highly regarded graduate recruitment programme.

“We are progressing more and more towards flexible working arrangements for staff. It is set up to allow staff to work anywhere, regardless of where they are based and enables many to work from home. The number of hours worked is not as important as delivery on annual revised goals in employees’ Performance Development Programme (PDP). We refer to this virtual dynamic as Agile Working.

Everybody at Unilever has an annual work plan that lists all activities that you do or are responsible for. Once we have ascertained all activities and responsibilities we utilise what we term a ‘3 Plus 1’ goal setup as a measuring tool in order to prioritise goals.

The “3” represents business goals and the

“1” represents a goal centred on development of the self, the team or colleagues. All goals are formally assessed from a pre-set achievement threshold level. It is reviewed and all achievements are captured in our global PDP platform, the cornerstone of our performance assessment process.

We also utilise 360° feedback where individual employees select colleagues, peers and line managers as performance raters. The PDP system notifies the line mangers to request sign off for the list of raters. The system then sends a survey to the approved rater and once completed online, it collates the responses and produces a report that is sent to the individual staff member and line manager. This 360° feedback is not used in the same manner as the PDP assessment; it is used more to identify development opportunities rather than rate performance,” Irvine passionately shared.

“Unilever can provide employees with the best in technology, branding, insight and opportunities to gain skills and work within the global context. When we say people are our greatest asset, this is not just an empty statement, because they have huge jobs and have to deliver.”
