SHOW PREVIEW | TAIPEI CYCLE
Taipei Cycle goes silver
Jonathon Harker previews the 25th Taipei Cycle show, one of the year’s most essential international bike exhibitions...
NOW IN its 25th year, Taipei Cycle is set to draw the world’s bicycle industry to the halls of Nangang Exhibition Centre from March 7th to 10th. Trade shows rarely resist the temptation to state they’re increasing in size, but Taipei has gone one better by revealing its increased space for 2012 has not only been filled well in advance of the show, but it has not been enough to meet demand. So, in 2013, it will be dedicating yet more space for exhibitors eager to showcase their wares. Impressive stuff. This year a whopping 1,089 exhibitors will be taking up 3,284 booths at the show, which is an expansion of around 230 booths. Demand has grown beyond that which can be offered by 1F and 4F of the exhibition hall, so Nangang’s sixth floor and outdoor area have also been opened up for the show this year. At Taipei the COLIPED-organised EU
Pavilion will return for the 20th time (featuring a number of UK companies), while exhibitors from a total of 36 countries will appear at the show.
TAIPEI TIME TRAVEL Making your way around all those extra exhibitors is going to take more of your precious time. Thankfully the organisers have thought of that and have introduced some measures to make your trip easier. If you register before your arrival you
can have your entrance badge delivered to your hotel (for free). Transport between the Nangang Exhibition Centre and Taoyuan International Airport has been improved too, with a near-non-stop route now

CYCLE PRIZES This year the organisers have also upped the ante by teaming up with the world famous iF design forum for Taipei’s first trade awards (D & I Awards). Over 60 entries were received by November and at time of print we’re still waiting to see how many got in before the January deadline. Entries have been made in four
categories – Bicycles, Components, Clothing and equipment for cyclists and Accessories. Last month an independent panel of jury
begun the evaluation process, during which they selected the five best entries for a Taipei Cycle Gold Award. All the winners will be revealed at the Awards Ceremony, scheduled to take place at the show on March 7th 2012. Taipei Cycle runs alongside the Taipei
Sports Textile and Accessory Expo, and it's the accessory market that is going to receive greater focus at this year’s show, we’re told. And while new product and business
opportunities will be the primary reasons to attend as always, Taipei Cycle also runs alongside the International Bicycle Design Competition, the International Bicycle Trend Forum and in the same month as the Tour de Taiwan. Those following the great e-bike debate can also head to the Taipei Power Forum-Electric Two-Wheeler Symposium, taking place on March 8th at Room 401.
WHAT: Taipei sprung into existence 25 years ago following the success of TaiSPO (Taipei Int’l Sporting Goods Show) – then in its 14th year. Within a decade the show was hosting 533 exhibitors to use 1,539 booths, during which time the Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association had formed (in 1992) to promote Taiwan-made bicycles to the world. By 2007 the event was Asia’s largest cycle show, according to the organisers. Last year Taipei Cycle saw a
record 948 exhibitors from 36 countries take up 3,060 booths.
ORGANISER: Founded in 1970 to help promote foreign trade, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), is a non-profit trade promotion organisation. It is jointly sponsored by the government, industry associations, and several commercial organisations.
