Neil Bravery, MD, and Claire Gains, Skipton Hire Centres
I became MD of SHC in
September, enabling former MD Claire to concentrate on developing our dedicated event hire business, Blue Sky Event Solutions. I have actually worked for SHC before, as Sales Director, and I have also held positions with GAP as National Accounts Manager and, most recently, with
Brandon as North West Regional Manager. It’s great to be back at SHC, which has four successful depots
across the Yorkshire region. And I’m really excited about visiting the Show to strengthen contacts with suppliers, as well as seeing what’s new, such as the latest power tools addressing issues like HAV, powered access machinery and lifting equipment. As an independent you can make purchasing decisions quickly, adding new products to the fleet to explore new markets, and if you don’t have it on the shelf, you can’t hire it out.

The Show is an opportunity
to look at what’s new, and to see if there are niche products we can add that will attract a good hire rate. My list of items to look out for include heaters and dehumidifiers, for which we invariably find business for in the colder months, with people taking winter breaks and coming back to burst pipes after their central heating systems have run out of oil!
I’m also interested in
checking out the latest compact powered access solutions, as
well as catching up on developments in mobile towers. It’s all too easy to overlook these bread and butter products, and it’s important for hirers to keep updated on the new designs and assembly methods targeting Health & Safety, as well as configurations that can facilitate work in areas such as stairwells.

Currently business is tough, and that makes it all the more important to attend the Executive Hire Show. I have not been able to visit before, but I am keen to see the latest machinery that can win me more business. Those hirers who add new products to their fleets first will gain the greatest rewards. I will be looking at mobile
crushing equipment for on-site recycling, which is a requirement for an increasing number of customers, and I will be interested to see the latest in mini excavators and attachments. It is very important to keep informed about new equipment and keeping in touch with industry developments, and visiting the Show is a great way of doing so.

The Ricoh Arena is a superb venue offering excellent access, and what’s so good about the Executive Hire Show is that everything is there under one roof. You can get to see everyone you need to during one
intensive visit. I have looked at the floor plan and I am impressed by the breadth of exhibitors. I wasn’t able to attend last year, so I am looking forward to my visit in February to touch base with suppliers and industry contacts, and to generally stay informed about what is happening in my industry. Our fleet chiefly comprises powered access equipment, large compressors, compact plant and compaction machinery, but we are always looking at new opportunities and niche markets we can target. We understand our customers’ requirements, and we can make decisions quickly about products that might appeal to them. It’s also important to monitor customers’ changing needs. For example, we have noticed growing demand for our trailer-mounted access machinery from tree care specialists, as well as for chippers, and I’ll be looking for other items on show that we could offer to this customer base.

We are going to the Show with the aim of finding products for niche markets that aren’t being served by the nationals, and for which we can achieve a good hire rate. Also, surface preparation is a market we could be doing more in, as well as grounds care and landscaping equipment, so I will be looking closely at the latest relevant machinery from exhibiting suppliers. We are a relatively new company, having opened for business in June 2010, and the Show enables us to make contact with new and existing suppliers and to cement relationships with them, helping us to do more business in the future. We plan to spend one day at the Show, and I hope that two more staff will be able to attend on the other one. Visiting the exhibition enables a hire company’s personnel to get a wider view of the industry they work in, and it is a valuable learning experience.

“ Like other hirers, we have had a couple of relatively flat years, during
which we reined back our capital expenditure. However, we need to keep our fleet up to date and are now embarking on a planned programme of investment.
In particular at the Show I want to talk to suppliers about the latest cut-off saws available, and we are also planning to replace a number of
our mini excavators in the near future. The exhibition will enable me to consider in one place new models that we could add to the fleet.
