the extreme with only the occasional partial feed (fi xed by bumping the rear of the slide) slowing the plinking action. Had the unit been better maintained, I’m sure reliability would have approached 100%. Truly, the only care given to the unit for the entire trip was an occasional wiping out of the gunk accumulation and an occasional yet thorough lubing of the slide/frame rails. The magazine that comes with this conversion unit
warrants special mention. First of all, it holds 15 rounds of 22 LR. For a plinking pistol more is better! But here’s the cool thing! These aluminum magazines are dead ring- ers for the plastic Kimber rimfi re magazines and they function in both 22 LR and 17 M2 Kimber 1911 pistols; in most cases more reliably than the Kimber mags. I had two of these magazines and we tried them in four different 17 M2 and one 22 LR Kimber 1911 during the summer trip. Performance in all the guns was 100%. As a testimony to how good these mags worked in Kimber Rimfi re 1911s, I should note that I orderd magazines from Iver Johnson for all of the owners of the Kimber pistols tested when I returned home. Also worthy of note is the fact that these magazines completely disassemble for cleaning. Even the back of the magazine is removable, giving one complete access to the interior of the mag body. Considering the cost of some conversion units on the
market, the $249 price tag of the Iver Johnson Arms 22 LR unit is pretty reasonable. If all the units from Iver Johnson perform as well as my sample (which I purchased, by the way) they are a great bargain indeed. And for any owners of Kimber Rimfi re Target 1911s that have feeding issues, I strongly suggest you invest $40 and try an Iver Johnson Arms 22 LR Conversion Unit magazine. CRKT EAT’N TOOL
I bought this handy utensil at the 2011 SHOT Show
on a whim. Never seeming to have a means at hand of getting pork and beans, peaches, or whatever from can to mouth when needed, this looked like a pretty good idea at the show. The Eat’N Tool has proven to be an excellent companion in the fi eld. Made from stainless steel, this neat little tool is a spoon, fork, cap lifter, screw driver, wrench (6, 8, &10mm), and mini pry bar. At $4, how can you go wrong! VANGUARD EQUALIZER 1QS BIPOD
This lightweight bipod is designed to fi t on rifl es
with a Picatinny rail or it can be fi tted to any rifl e with a normal sling swivel stud using the included Quick Shoe rail system adapters. Two of these Picatinny rail adapters are included, allowing for a quick switch of the bipod from one gun to another. I fi tted a Quick Shoe rail block to the front swivel stud
on the round hand guard of a Colt 6720 Coyote rifl e. With a height ranging from 7 to 10 inches, and a twist lock sleeve leg locking system, the 1QS was about perfect for my prone style of shooting, and the legs did not suffer from the all to common “slow sag syndrome” associated with some friction locking bipod legs. With a 30-degree swing and a 5-degree tilt angle, traversing from one target to another was quick and positive. The feet on this unit convert from rubber (for shooting off the hood) to metal spikes with just a few turns of the rubber foot. Truth be told, this is a sturdy and versatile bipod and, with the Picatinny quick shoe set-
