into the yard directly between the barn and the old house, searching for the source of the sound. They looked like the farmer’s dogs running around the homestead. They were mere inches from the caller sitting in the woodpile and only 25 yards from me when they catch my scent and start to back off. As they mill around the caller I try to determine which one to shoot fi rst to give me the greatest chance of getting them both. And where is the third one? After a minute or two, and with

no sign of the third, the fi rst pair begin to wander back in the direction they came from. An occasional squeak from the caller is keeping them interested but I decided it was time to take them as it looked like number three was not go- ing to show up. I settled the crosshairs on the smaller of the pair, assuming this was the female. At no more than 50 yards I took the shot and watched the coyote crumple through the scope

on my rifle. I then searched for her mate, hoping to get off another shot before it could leave the yard … but I saw nothing! It couldn’t have left the yard without me seeing it. Then, from behind the woodpile, the second coyote casually appeared as if nothing had happened. For the second time I settled the crosshairs of my rifl e on the coyote’s shoulder and carefully took the shot … and watched it fall onto the snow. Two of the three were now down and I’ve been here only a few minutes. I walked to the downed pair and

found the fi rst coyote was in fact not the female but a smaller young male with an older female. You never know for sure. My attention then turned to the third coyote. He must have gone back down the drainage to the southwest. I decided to work the pastures to the north and west of the homestead and give the third coyote a chance to settle down. I hunted for another two hours to the north and

west and saw nothing. I saw very few tracks outside of the immediate area around the cattle, so this was convincing me more and more that I had gotten the right coyotes. It was now time to try to outwit number three. I moved about a mile on foot to the

southwest of the buildings site and set up to make my stand on the drainage where the third coyote had disappeared. This drainage was very steep, with sides extending 300 feet up from the bottom. Yucca plants helped to hide my torso and allowed me to take a sitting position with much needed back support. I assumed he or she would be

lonely and wonder where the other two coyotes were so I let out a very soft voice howl. After a minute or two I let out another, a little louder, and then waited. About 400 yards down the drainage a coyote appeared on the ridge. He stared my way but wouldn’t close the distance. I let out another soft voice howl and he started walking toward me on the oppo- site side of the drainage. He wasn’t sure about the howl but he was interested. I remained silent and slowly got things situated for my shot. As he came up the drainage he dropped down to the bot- tom and continued walking toward me, pausing about every 50 yards. I couldn’t let this coyote get directly below and across from me as he might be able to catch my scent so I focused on a spot in the bottom where I would have to stop him before that could happen. As he reached that spot I woofed at him and he stopped. Slowly I squeezed the trigger and he fell to the ground as the sound of the rifl e echoed down the drainage. Although there is no way I can be

sure this was the third coyote from the fi rst stand, I am confi dent enough to bet that it was! As with most Animal Dam- age Control Specialists, you “high fi ve” yourself for a job well done. But you try not to get too cocky or too depressed when things don’t work out because it all evens out in the end. This was a good one. I enjoyed the hunt but now it’s time to go on to the next. After the mile-long walk back to

my truck, I phoned the rancher and gave him all the details of my morning’s suc- cess and asked him to call again if any other coyotes show up. I then headed on down the road, to another complaint, another coyote, and another story!
