der length is 0.096". Case neck length on the 30 Rem. is 0.297", making it longer with the larger shoulder again at an increased case body of 0.494", versus 0.440" at the case web and 0.395” at the shoulder. The 7.62x39 has a tapered case body and the 30 Rem. does not. The 30 Rem. parent case is a cut down .450 Bushmaster, with a rebated rim. It can house up to 44 grains of powder, making it a very workable example in the centerfire department that creeps closer to the ballistics of the 308 Win., but definitely is not there yet, and in my mind never will be. Function of the Remington R-15

and the 30 Rem. round was flawless during the firing of 150 rounds prior to a major takedown and cleaning. I did notice that the rifle tended to spread spent cases around in a somewhat non- predictable way. At times brass was found in my truck bed 10 yards away, and at other times under the truck near the engine, which was a very long way away. My conclusion is that this could have been the rifle, or possibly a trait of the 30 Remington (which is based on a straight-walled case) during extraction under pressure. After the run at paper targets and

observing the rifle and the cartridge’s ability to produce very workable groups, I was quite eager to get the total system into the field for some late season deer and coyote applications. Remington had supplied Core-Lokt 125-grain ammunition for testing, and with that I was ready for whitetail during the late season here in South Dakota. The magazine was five-shot, but held only four with ease. I have no idea how an extended high capacity magazine would function because the test rifle was not offered with anything but this low-capacity cartridge holder for testing purposes.

Late season hunting is also great

cold weather testing because of the con- ditions that drop out of a western South Dakota sky. Bullets slow down in the cold, powder is less efficient at low tem- peratures, and rifle function can show problems associated with cartridge feeding, extraction, and accuracy much of the time. That was exactly my think- ing as I baled out of my off-road Polaris Ranger RZR into an ink black predawn with the temperature hovering around 6 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. I was scouting deer a week ahead

of the late Dakota season, but packing my set of mouth-blown coyote calls and a top-of-the-line FoxPro electronic

game/predator calling machine. Slip- ping in a four-round magazine, then sending home a chambered round of 30 Rem. AR, I was road ready to make my way slowly down a two-track on foot to quietly get into a good position. My plan was to look over a wide valley with some old, abandoned ranch buildings scattered among the rocks. A rancher friend of mine owned the place, and used the area near the old house and barn to stack round bales of hay for the winter. Deer and other critters took up residence near the warmer hay stacks when the temperatures dropped off during the mid-winter months. Figuring the 30 Rem. had a solid
