to mostly sunny skies. My kind of dog shootin’ weather! For this day’s shooting I picked

up a bolt action rifle, the M77 Mark II Target Rifle, chambered in 204 Ruger. The stainless steel action and bar- rel have a matte gray finish and the black-gray laminated stock has a wide fore-end which rides bags well and is fitted with sling swivel studs. The barrel is 26" long and has no sights. The stainless steel bolt is one-piece and has a three-position safety and a non-rotating controlled round feed extractor. Integral scope mount bases are machined directly on the receiver, and scope rings are included with the rifle. The two-stage target trigger fea- tures a light target pull with no creep or overtravel. Weight of rifle is 9.75 pounds. The hinged floor plate allows easy unloading. This rifle was topped with a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50mm Long Range scope. The Mark II rifle was a pleasure

to shoot … so much so that I hogged it all day and didn’t let anyone else get their hands on it. The trigger was smooth and let off crisply, with no

overtravel. The rifle weighs enough that recoil and muzzle jump are mini- mal, allowing the shooter to spot his own hits … and make a correction on the occasion of a rare miss. While I’d had a lot of fun the previous day trying out several different firearms, I particularly enjoyed this day spent with only this rifle. Though there was considerably less wind than the day before, that did not mean no wind. Occasional puffs messed with a bullet, resulting in a miss. But the combina- tion of high velocity ammunition, fine optics, and crisp, smooth trigger made a second shot almost a sure thing. (A few years of experience shooting prai- rie dogs helps a bit also.) Now and then someone stopped

by and spotted a few shots for me, and that’s always a help, which I appreci- ate. But, for the most part, I shot by myself that day. I’ve always believed learning to be your own spotter helps you concentrate more and become a better shot. And of course having high quality equipment at hand is a definite plus. There were more models of guns

at this event than I had time to work with, but I think I got to quite a few of them. The hunt really was a good op- portunity to get some “hands on” time with a number of fine firearms. Such field time provides a shooter some- thing to think about when considering the purchase of a new gun. And we all like to buy a new gun now and then.
