fi rst few days just cold and dry. This weather kept those bullet catchers close to their holes and hard to spot. The group decided to change
their tactics a little. We traded off spot- ting and shooting to pick up the kill rate for the guys with the trigger time. With the last couple of days left
we were surprised to see snow had covered our vast killing fi elds. Our thoughts were our whistle pig shoot- ing was over. The group decided to have break-
fast before we left early to go home. Breakfast, by the way, was cooked

to perfection by long-time friend and handloading buddy Mark Hayes who shoots an AR-15 204 Ruger. After consuming more “fat pills”
than I should have, we milled around, kicking rocks, and cussing under our breath about the fact our trip was over. Then somebody said we should go and check our spot … with wish- ful thinking that there might be a few targets to shoot. With that said, my long-time friend, shooting buddy, and past loading partner Paul Simonson and I saddled up his truck and headed for the spot that we had reconned the night before. To our surprise we could see
ground squirrels running on top of the snow. The plan was to set up benches and shoot for a while. Turned out shooting over the snow was a blast! You could spot and range your targets

with the scope reticle a lot easier be- cause of the absence of mirage. Then, when you connected with the target you could store that range for future reference because the dead whistlepig was easy to spot. This was the fi rst time I could shoot out to 500 yards with some consistency. It was a lot of fun to shoot with
these guys! One shooter, Fred Porter, is 80 years old and is still a pretty fair trigger squeezer. And I need to men- tion the other varmint hunters in our group: Sam Scot, Larry Pitman, Bill Gable Jr., and Rick Jamie. I would like to dedicate this story
to Jim Holliday, short-time friend and fellow shooting and fi shing buddy who passed away suddenly on December 25, 2009.
