That’s a far cry from 73/4 pounds, and it’s right about where you want to be with a varmint rifle without the scope. For those not familiar with the X7,
it was designed with ease and economy of production being the foremost priori- ties, as evidenced by its highly attractive price tag. As such, the receiver is tubular like a Remington 700 or a Savage 110-se- ries – utilizing a separate washer-type recoil lug. And like the Savage, the bar- rel is fitted using a lock nut which facili- tates the headspace operation. Also like the Savage, the bolt head is a separate unit that slip-fits into the bolt body and is held in place with a cross pin with a hole in its center to allow passage of the firing pin. The gas baffle on the Savage that looks like a second row of locking lugs behind the real ones is not present on this rifle. The recessed bolt face houses a
plunger ejector and the extractor slides radially within a T-slot at the front of the right-side locking lug. The handle is integral with the fluted bolt body, and at the rear is a nicely contoured shroud that has a silhouette very similar to a Weatherby Vanguard or a Sako. The trigger is conceptually similar to Sav- age’s AccuTrigger and Mossberg’s LBA trigger in that there is a blade jutting out from the center of the finger piece that must be fully depressed before the trigger itself moves to fire the gun. It is user-adjustable down to 2.5 lbs. The two-position side safety blocks trigger movement. The black, injection molded stock is exactly the same as that found on the

X7 sporter models except that the barrel channel is larger to accommodate the heavier barrel. I would have preferred that Marlin went with a varmint/target- style stock with a wide, flat fore-end for more stability off sandbags, but again, a different stock would add to the cost. For that reason a blind magazine is employed, and the trigger guard bow is integral with the stock, thus eliminating the need for a separate unit. Ever hear of Premier Riflescopes (
www.premieroptics.com)? Well, if you haven’t, you’re not alone. I stumbled upon their exhibit booth at the SHOT Show this past February and was im- pressed enough to order one, and the first opportunity I had to check it out was with this Marlin varminter. If you haven’t heard the name, it’s
because the company, which has been in business for 65 years, has been busy sup- plying tactical sniper scopes to USMC sniper units around the world. Their appearance at the SHOT Show was to
premier their entry into the hunting/ recreational shooting market with their Heritage Hunter scope. Essentially, all they did was to take their flagship glass – the same 3-15x50 they supply the Marines with – and incorporate a different reticle more suited to hunting. In other words, the scope is built to the same high standards as required by their government contract. Component parts are produced
in Germany and hand assembled here in the company’s Winchester, Virginia, facility. The scopes are waterproof sub- mersible to 33 ft. with the turret caps off, and come with a lifetime guarantee that is transferrable should one decide to sell it. These scopes are based on a 30mm body tube and have an adjustment latitude of 65 inches at 100 yards. The focus/parallax adjustment is located on the left side of the turret rather than having to rotate the objective bell – a real convenience, especially when shooting prairie rats where ranges can vary from
