A New Day In Shotgun Systems Remington HD 20 Caliber Coyote L.P. Brezny

amount of new shotgun development, and could be described as the evolution of the “ground gun.” What is a ground gun, you might ask? Shotguns that are dedicated to shooting ground-dwelling critters such as coyotes, foxes, or turkeys. (Yes, we know turkeys can fl y but they do spend a lot of time on the ground, and are so hunted.) While we have some great new specialized loads that have been thoroughly reviewed, there are nu- merous new shotguns that match these specialized fur-taking scattergun loads. What a coyote hunter wants in a
T
shotgun is a gun that allows a fl exible use of sights, such as scopes, red dot, or open. The gun needs to be shorter than a bird gun because it may be packed into a stand as a second gun, or often used from a ground blind in deep cover. In the camo department hunters want shotguns that carry camo patterns, or can be easily hand painted in a dull gray or black or a variety of earth or green foliage colors. The short form here that quickly
comes to mind is the word “specialized.” One of the major changes of late is
the offering of the new M-16 or AR-15 type butt stocks for scatterguns. While
he last couple of years have produced a considerable
fitted with a broom handle grip and an extendable butt stock, these are not the real deal when it comes to fl ying targets, but in the ground game they serve exceptionally well because the “Tactical” type shotgun is designed for solid holding on an incoming fox or coyote. For several examples of the new age in scattergun design we can look at both Remington Arms in terms of the 870 and 11-87, and Mossberg with their Model 500 and the 835/935 basic turkey- style short shotguns in the middle price range market. Such shotguns are being gravitated toward by many coyote call- ers. No, predator hunting is not a place for the dolled up, engraved, clay bird shooter, even though a fancy target gun or even upland gun could do the job in most respects. While hunting one winter recently
in Nevada with CODA Hunts and Cory Lundberg out of Salt Lake City, we tested the effectiveness of the Remington AR- style stocked 870, coupled with Rem- ington 20 caliber “HD” 12 gauge 3" high density tungsten coyote loads. On almost every calling stand during harsh winter conditions the 870 was called upon for use in heavy cover and did its job several times as song dogs came rolling in on a
