crosshairs on the target to establish the correct aiming point for that particular target distance. By observing the exact amount

of “drop” involved in the particular distance fired, I could refer to the mea- surement tables from Points A, B, or C for that distance to aid in establishment of the proper “aiming point” on the coy- ote body, and then I’d touch off another two rounds just for “insurance” that all was correct. In anticipation of there not being

enough height on the coyote target to record the drop at the extended ranges, I mounted an 8" x 10" target on a piece of cardboard that was 6½ feet tall and three feet wide, because of the potential drop that would be involved for ranges beyond 300 yards. I’d simply aim at the target, sketch my “ranging view,” fire two shots and drive (I was not walking the longer distances) to the target. I’d measure the amount of drop (distance from the bull’s eye to impact), then tape another target over the bullet holes (so I could locate the impact area through the scope at the longer ranges), return back to the shooting stand, aiming again

through the scope one more time to determine which portions of the duplex would provide an aiming point for that particular distance, as illustrated on the 400- and 500-yard sketches. I’m pretty sure I’m not unique in

being the first person to experiment with the use of the Duplex reticle design for a rangefinder or for trajectory adjust- ments. But I sure had fun developing this system and have the satisfaction of knowing that ranging with my rifle scope can be accomplished to hit close enough to be dangerous. I also gained
