and speed barrel cooling. The laminated wood stock is made
with ¹⁄₁₆" layers to make it ultra-stable. Layers alternate with a very dark gray layer and a very light gray layer. It has a straight beavertail fore-end that is fl at on the bottom and is 1¾ wide for optimal accuracy. This stock has both glass bedding and pillar bedding for added strength. The soft rubber butt pad is black and is ¾ " thick. The grip, with a steel cap, has a long, shallow curve because this is a fi eld stock that may be fi red from the prone position rather than a bench. (The Kimber LongMaster VT and SVT models have near vertical grips for bench shooting.) Two sling swivel studs are on the fore-end, ac- commodating both a sling and a bipod at the same time. Unfortunate news for left-handers:
This rifl e is not available in a left-hand version and it is my understanding that the Kimber custom shop does not modify them. The rifl e came with scope mounts
and I installed one of the new Redfi eld TX 27 scopes, marketed by Leupold. This model is a 5-20x44mm with 4-Plex reticle, adjustable eyepiece, adjustable objective on the left side of the turret, and matte black fi nish. Reticle adjust- ments have knurled knobs so no coin or screwdriver is needed, and clicks are smooth and positive. One click equals ¼ minute of angle at 100 yards. The plex-style reticle is slightly thicker than I would prefer for long shots on small targets like prairie dogs, but it’s not all that thick … certainly not a deal breaker. When it came time to sight-in the scope I didn’t think the reticle’s central intersec- tion was much of a hindrance. It’s odd how sometimes a rifle
likes one type of ammunition and obvi- ously dislikes a different type. Shooting groups with this Kimber clearly showed this tendency. One type of Reming- ton factory ammo definitely did not get along with this rifl e. I was getting groups that were more like patterns … about 2 inches. Yet, this ammo has shot well for me in another rifl e. I asked a Remington employee who works in their ammunition department why such a wide variation in accuracy may show up. He said it could be something as simple as a bullet of a given length or weight might get along well with a bar- rel of a particular twist rate but not shoot

well in a barrel with a different twist rate, and that very likely was the situa- tion with this Kimber. Then I tried two different types of Winchester factory ammunition and got groups hovering around an inch … with one group that had four of the fi ve shots measuring 0.442”. Better! Finally I got around to some of my handloads that I had put
together with Norma cases and Barnes bullets. Better yet! Five-shot groups were under an inch and I had three-shot groups measuring 0.659”, 0.458”, and 0.391”. At this point I was convinced the Kimber is a shooter! Now I was ready to go prairie dog hunting.
Four shots with Winchester factory ammunition went into 0.442”. This Kimber clearly can produce fi ne accuracy.
