far too much to watch the action, and burns out barrels too quickly – but it is a superb round for any larger varmints, whether rockchucks or coyotes, and also works great on the occasional deer or pronghorn. Now, I don’t use 40-grain bullets on “big game” with

the Swift, though no doubt the right one would work. But there’s nothing at all wrong with 40-grain bullets on coyotes, especially the Ballistic Tip with its heavy jacket-base. In this rifle 46.0 grains of Ramshot Big Game gives the 40 BT over 4,300 fps, and the little bullet shoots amazingly flat. Of course, these days we’re supposed to twist turrets to

shoot coyotes at longer ranges, but one of the facts of coyote hunting is that they often allow only a very short time for the shot. For coyotes at really long range I do tend to twist turrets, but I also tend to use cartridges larger than the 220 Swift. At ranges out to 350 yards a 40-grain bullet at warp speed allows any Swift used to aim in the middle of a coyote’s chest, and hit it. This because a 40-grain Ballistic Tip at 4,300+ fps can

be sighted in dead-on at 300 yards, and land no more than 2" above point of aim at closer ranges. I tested this on a 6" bullseye target, shooting two shots at the target at 100 yards, 200 yards, 300, and 350 yards. The entire group of eight shots measures only 4.5" vertically, making it quite possible to aim right in the middle of a coyote’s chest out to 350 yards and kill the coyote. This is just one of the reasons I’m still a big fan of the 220 Swift – and an even bigger fan of 40-grain bullets in any .22 centerfire.
