PORTLAND: MILD TO WILD Portland usually has mild winters and warm summers. But when winter cold builds east of the Cascades and low pressure blankets the coast, winds can blast through the Columbia River Gorge at tree-ripping speed. They hit east Portland hard and usually curve south, some- times icing up trees clear to Milwaukie. If you live east of Interstate 205, plant trees whose limbs bear up well in ice storms—for example, black walnut, ginkgo, linden, and sweet gum.
