THE HANUKKAH LAMP: MODERNIST STYLE AND THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE
Through Jan.15, 2012 • For refugees from Europe who came to British-mandate Pales- tine, the making of these lamps was a process that encouraged reflection on the history of a holi- day as well as a tool for coming to terms with new and unfamiliar ex- periences. Far from being merely a formal element, modernist style was a reminder of their Europe, brutally dismantled by Nazism.
ART AND FAITH OF THE CRECHE: THE COLLECTION OF JAMES AND EMILIA GOVAN
Through Jan.15, 2012 • The story of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus is a story of a family fac- ing both hardship and hope. ONLINE EXHIBIT
January 2012 • The observation of time is a key discipline for videographers. David
and Hi-Jin Hodge have long been aware that every minute of a film can draw viewers to a closer, deep- er understanding of a topic. They use digital technology to show the depth and power of explor- ing a subject in a methodical way. Themes include impermanence of human life, a meditative study of the ocean, and an exploration of what people leave behind.
HEAVEN+HELL
Feb. 10–June 30, 2012 • The perspectives that these self-taught artists have taken are expressed in forms ranging from illustrative, word-laden drawings to stylized, sculptural versions of images that populate their con- ceptions of heaven and hell. The content may be benign or horrific, obsessive or minimal in design. The exhibition is co-organized with Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art.
