A family tradition L

Mary Kate and Brendan Styler have a lot to live up to on the volleyball court.

oyola freshman Mary Kate Styler likes having her older brother, Ram- bler volleyball standout Brendan

Styler, on campus. Brendan, standing an imposing 6 feet, 6 inches tall, is a red-shirt senior and right-side hitter for the nation- ally ranked men’s volleyball team. The sports management and marketing major also is a top performer in the classroom, a perennial member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association All- Academic Team.

VOLLEYBALL Mary Kate is no slouch, either. She’s an

outside hitter for Loyola’s women’s volley- ball team after a successful career on the Mother McAuley High School volleyball team, a Chicago powerhouse. The 5-foot, 11-inch outside hitter helped McAuley to a 32-8 record her senior year, finishing with 224 kills and 97 blocks. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and is an accomplished violinist. Mary Kate and Brendan attribute much

of this high achievement to their family tree. Their father, Ken Styler, was a star basketball player at St. Xavier University in Chicago and was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame. He is cur- rently the athletic director at Richards High School in Oak Lawn. The siblings also have an athletically

accomplished aunt: Therese Boyle-Niego, a star volleyball player at the University of the Pacific, and the former head coach of Loyola’s women’s volleyball team for six seasons. During her tenure, the team compiled a 140-72 record, and earned the first two NCCA volleyball tournament appearances in the school’s history. Boyle- Niego’s achievements recently earned her induction into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame. Suffice it to say that success is a

cornerstone of the Styler family tradition. “I guess you could say that athletics is

part of the family culture,” Brendan laughs. “My mom and dad were always there

for us, whether it was to offer advice or to drive us to a practice. And my aunt really helped me with my volleyball career,” Mary Kate says. And while Brendan and Mary Kate re-

main close on campus, they also are close to their immediate family, just a 45-minute trip to their hometown of Oak Lawn. “That’s why I like going to Loyola,” Mary

Kate says. “I can see my brother on cam- pus, and it’s just a short ride if I want to go home. My family is important to me.”
