ALMA MATTERS IN MEMORIAM B
ernard (Bernie) Beazley (JD ‘50), an alum- nus and a member of the Loyola Univer- sity Chicago Board of Trustees (since June
2007), died on Sunday, September 18. Mr. Beazley attended Loyola on a GI Bill after
Bernard Beazley
serving in World War II. Even though he had not finished high school before enlisting, then-Dean Fitzgerald recognized his talent and capacity for learning and helped him complete his academic background in order to enter the School of Law. Mr. Beazley’s law studies were a success, and he secured a job as counsel to the American Dental Associa-
tion. That began his notable career in health law, which included serving as Secretary of the Coun- cil on Dental Trade and Laboratory Relations and culminated in his role as general counsel and senior vice president of Dentsply International, a world leader in dental products. Earlier this year, Mr. Beazley lost his wife, Kath-
ie, with whom he had nine children. The Beazleys have supported many law school programs over the years. Their generosity led to the establish- ment of the Beazley Institute for Health Law and
Policy, the A. Kathleen Beazley Chair in ChildLaw, the Kathleen and Bernard Beazley Research Pro- fessorship, and several student scholarships.
October 10. Known as the “Baron of Barrington,”
J
Joe Gentile
Mr. Gentile made a name for himself as a Chrysler Plymouth automobile dealer in the Chicago suburb of Barrington. In recognition of his generosity to Loyola, the Gentile Arena was named for him. Mr. Gentile was a lifelong supporter and fan of the Rambler programs,
and for many years he sponsored the television and radio broadcasts of Loyola basketball games. In addition to his car dealership, he also owned WJJG-AM radio, where he hosted a weekday show from 7–9 a.m. “We celebrate Joe’s passion for life
and athletics, as well as his commitment to students,” said Loyola’s president and CEO, Michael J. Garanzini, S.J.
