Liliana Huerta (BBA ’03) and Mi- chelle Rossfeld were joined in a Civil Union on September 10, 2011. The couple met in 2009 when Ms. Huerta joined a fitness class, part of a fitness bootcamp, run by Ms. Rossfeld, a personal trainer.


Byron F. Macias (BA ’03) earned a Master in Theological Studies from St. Meinrad School of Theology on May 14, 2011. In addition, Mr. Macias joined Pilsen Wellness Center in Chicago as an ATOD (Alcohol Tobacco and other Drug) Prevention Specialist. One of his functions is to manage the mentoring program in an alternative high school while working closely with Loyola under- graduate students.


John F. Eller (PhD ’04), a national expert on employee coaching, presented at a workshop hosted by St. Cloud State University’s Corporate Education and Outreach, the profes- sional development training arm of the university’s Center for Continuing Studies. Mr. Eller’s client list includes “medical device giant Medtronic, the Michigan Department of Education and the federal [sic] Department of Homeland Security.”


Sandra J. Engelking (JD ’05) was promoted to partner at the law firm of Smith Amundsen LLC.


Rev. Ryan Lozano (MA ’05) and his wife, Gina, welcomed their son Jacob Doyle Lozano into the world on the 10th of May 2011. Addition- ally, Fr. Ryan completed his PhD at St. Alcuin House Seminary this year, accepted a position as a full-time adjunct professor in the Philosophy Department of San Antonio College, and was appointed the curate of St. Joseph’s Anglican Church in New Braunfels, Texas.


Darin S. McGinnis (MA ’05, PhD ’11) recently joined Wheeling Jesuit University as assistant profes- sor of philosophy.


Santiago Aranda Avaolos (BS/BA ’06) married Carolina Hernandez in Mexico City in fall 2011. Plenty of love and fun was shared with other Loyola alumni.


Dalila M. Duarte (BSEd ’06) was accepted into Tennessee State Uni- versity last year in the fall. Currently, she is pursuing a doctoral degree in Pre-K–12 Administration and Supervision.


April R. Jervis (MBA ’06) is the author of the recently released book, 365 Ways to Raise Funds for Your Nonprofit: Practical Ideas for Every Not-for-Profit Organization. A book release party was held on Au- gust 26 at the Book Cellar Bookstore in Chicago.


Ashley Kuhl Piwowarski (BS ’06) and Richard Piwowarski (BA ’06) were married December 4, 2010, at Madonna della Strada Chapel. In April 2011, Ashley earned her Doctor of Psychology degree from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. The couple resides in Crestwood, Illinois.


Rebekah Danner O’Brien (BA ’07) and her husband, Blake O’Brien, wel- comed to the world their first baby, a daughter named Maeve Danner O’Brien, on December 7, 2010.


Stephanie M. Dernek (MA ’07), co- coordinator for the 8th Day Center for Justice, participated in a 75-mile walk along the Mexico and United States border to call attention to hu- man rights violations occurring along the border. The walk, Migrant Trail: We Walk for Life, is an annual event hosted by a variety of community, activist, and humanitarian groups, both nationally and internationally.


David E. Gale (BBA ’07), who played basketball for Loyola between 2003 and 2007, recently served as an as- sistant coach for the 2011 European Maccabi Games gold-medal-winning U16 basketball team. The team was composed of Jewish athletes from New Jersey, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Or- lando, Houston, and New York. The tournament ran from July 5-13, 2011, and was held in Vienna, Austria.


Kathryn Kenney (BS ’07), gradu- ated in May 2011 from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. In the four years since graduating from Loyola, she has completed a medical degree and an MBA in healthcare management and leadership from Rockhurst University. She began her psychia- try residency at the University of Cincinnati in July 2011.


Emily A. Kocik (BS ’07) and Joe Kocik were married on May 7, 2011, at Loyola University Chicago’s Madonna della Strada Chapel. Emily and Joe reside in Saint Paul, Minnesota.


Thomas R. Kress (BBA ’07) and Kristin Fox (BA ’07) were married in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on August 29, 2009.


Mario Lopez (EdD ’07) has been serving as a training officer at the Chicago Police Academy since 1997 where he teaches recruits, in-service personnel, and com- munity volunteers. His training for community residents focuses on things they can do to make their neighborhoods safer. A key part of this training involves addressing problem buildings and locations such as vacant properties. He shows residents how to research property ownership, tax, and municipal records to get the banks that own these buildings to secure and maintain them and work with the community.

Michael M. Nowak Jr. (BS ’07, MBA ’11) has been hired as a data management analyst for Accenture after working in Loyola University Chicago’s Advancement Division since 2007.


Laura Ritter (BBA ’07) will marry Loyola alumnus Michael Allio (BA ’06) in September 2012. Most of their wedding party will be fellow Ramblers, including John Serritella, C.J. Shapard, Ales- sandra Secco, Amy Passiak, Saira
