Kidde Fyrnetics publishes comprehensive guide
A new eight-page document has been published by Kidde Fyrnetics, to provide detailed guidance on all aspects of smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms. The Fire and
Co Safety Guide is intended for anyone involved with housing – including Registered
Social Landlords and private landlords, house-builders, developers, architects and electrical contractors. The guide also provides an informative commentary
on the complex and confusing combinations of standards, regulations and responsibilities that apply separately to fire and CO2
poisoning. The latest amendments and
future developments are highlighted, as well as areas where further change is still needed. Building Regulations around the UK and Ireland,
British Standard Codes of Practice, the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and housing quality standards, as well as civil law responsibilities are all covered and the guide clearly identifies the various different requirements that apply to particular localities and types of housing. It also highlights conflicts between different requirements and problems of interpretation.

Marshall-Tufflex’s Powerpole solution at Birmingham Airport
Technical performance, great aesthetics and ease of installation clinched the deal for Marshall-Tufflex’s Powerpole cable containment solution to handle power and data feeds within the new One Terminal facility at Birmingham Airport, the UK’s second largest outside London. The Marshall-Tufflex ‘island’ location Powerpoles have
Hager’s maintenance-free junction box meets 17th edition standards
Hager’s maintenance-free junction box is the only junction box to meet the requirements of Amendment 1 of the 17th Edition for maintenance-free connections. The company’s products, J803 and J804, contain
sprung push fit terminals that do not relax and therefore do not need to be accessible for future inspection. The standard BS 5733 defines tests for the terminals that include long-term connection test, pull-out, voltage drop, temperature rise and exposure to corrosive atmospheres. Hager’s maintenance-free junction box is robust, easy
to install, and compliant with both the 17th edition and the new junction box standard BS EN 60670-22 and the new revision of BS 5733. There are two products in the new range, a
three-terminal 32A and a four-terminal 20A version. Constructed from polycarbonate, the junction boxes will withstand impact damage and when installed they have a rating of IP2X.

been installed within the Terminal’s Passenger Security Area (PSA), handling power and data cables for vital X-ray, scanning and security equipment. They were specified jointly by Birmingham Airport and mechanical/ electrical consulting engineer Hulley and Kirkwood. They also met D5 Architects’ requirements for an aesthetically- pleasing solution to containing ceiling-fed power and data services to the point of use. Cable
management
expert Marshall-Tufflex offers a versatile range of Powerpoles and Powerposts for the management of power, data and communication services to island and non-perimeter work stations. The ceiling-fed containment systems eliminate
trailing cables, are easy, yet securely, accessible for cable management purposes and suit varying building constructions, with differing floor-to-ceiling heights.

Major contract for Ellis Patents Cable cleat manufacturer Ellis Patents will be supplying Vulcan trefoil cleats and new FlexiStrap short circuit straps throughout RWE npower’s new power station near Pembroke, South Wales. The 2,000MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT)
power station is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2012. Ellis Patents Vulcan cable cleats are available for
trefoil, single, quad and bundled cable applications where moderate levels of short circuit withstand are required. They are manufactured in type 316 stainless steel in order to offer the ultimate protection against the harshest conditions, and their compact design allows easy installation where space is limited. Furthermore, all Vulcan cleats come with an integral LSF Zero Halogen Polymeric liner and base pad that protects and cushions cables during short circuit conditions. The FlexiStrap is available in standard and heavy-
duty variants for use with Ellis Patents Vulcan + and Emperor cleats respectively. The strap has been short circuit tested in accordance with IEC61914 (2009).

Martindale Electric releases new range of Drummond test lamps
Martindale Electric has released the latest range of Drummond MTL10 and MTL20 test lamps, which provide a visual indication of voltage between 50V and 500V AC/DC and allows detection of any faults in a circuit. Both the MTL10 and MTL20 feature a finger shield
and insulated probe tip with only 4mm of exposed metal on both the lamp housing and the probe for added protection, while a two-layer double insulated cable with white inner insulation offers a clear warning of abrasion that might compromise user safety. As an extra precautionary measure, the cable is also
heat- and oil-resistant, making it suitable for a variety of applications. To enable use in most circumstances, a right angled
probe tip is supplied in addition to the two straight tips, and for maximum ease of use, the right angled probes can be rotated through 90, 180 and 270 degrees.
