Women’s w

ewer than one per cent of qualified electricians working in the contracting field are women. Add to that the fact that we are facing an impending skills crisis in the electrical industry and it becomes

clear that there is a rich vein of untapped potential that can be brought to the fore by attracting more women to a career in electrical contracting. Research into the reasons for low take-up of vocational

electrical training for women has found that there is a perception that that the electrical industry is a non-traditional environment that is unsuitable for females. For mature career

changes, it also emerged that existing routes to becoming an electrician are not flexible enough to accommodate family commitments. As a result, the ECA has launched ‘Wired for Success:

ECA Women into Electrical Contracting’ – an exciting and innovative new initiative to engage women, ensuring that they are represented in the sector. Wired for Success is a funded solution that sees the ECA working in partnership with other like-minded organisations to bring about a solution to the diversity, employment and skills issues of a key vocational industry.
