First stop After planning consent was granted in June 2010, five main contractors were invited to tender for the project – Balfour Beatty, BAM Construct UK, Laing O’Rourke, Skanska and Sir Robert McAlpine. After careful consideration, BAM Construct UK was awarded the contract in August 2010, with full redevelopment commencing shortly thereafter. Graham Cash, chief executive of BAM Construct UK,


states: ‘This building will provide great new facilities for Network Rail’s employees and be an exemplar of sustainability, helping to meet existing and future environmental targets. The project has is in itself created over a thousand new jobs, predominantly local, as well as millions of pounds of local investment. Our policy of recruiting and placing orders in the areas where we deliver our sustainable projects is part of our culture of giving something back to the communities where we build.’

other projects, LMOB Electrical Contractors was invited to tender for the electrical component of the development. LMOB director, Tom Marry, comments: ‘LMOB has


been established since 1987, and we have carved an enviable reputation for our ability to deliver projects to the highest standards of workmanship that are also on time and on budget.’ The contract was awarded to LMOB in February and,


asked what he thinks separated his company from the competition, Marry replies: ‘Our previous experience with BAM has always been positive and they knew that we would be able to work well with them to meet what is a pretty tight schedule.’


Grand designs The complex – designed by GMW Architects – will provide 37,000m2


of space and will comprise four office blocks


linked by internal bridges. It will have security gates, a coffee bar, a convenience store and meeting areas, and be entirely open plan. It is estimated that the development will cost £109m,


but the return on investment figures are impressive and Network Rail claims that The Quadrant:MK will pay for
