ECA News W

e could talk about the prospect of a double-dip recession or what little gems await us in the government’s Autumn Statement, but we are
all too painfully aware of the current climate and economic situation. What is needed is an antidote – a ray of sunshine in amongst the doom and gloom – and I believe I have just that! While the government has made its commitment to the skills agenda clear through its pledge to increase apprenticeship funding, welcome boosts in the form of the Growth and Innovation Fund and its attempt to inject more accountability into the delivery of vocational qualifications, it is clear that the government is looking to industry to work together to help provide further solutions.
Wired for Success
When Diane Johnson took up office as the first female ECA president last year, she felt compelled to do something to attract women into our industry. Linking this with her passion for skills was the obvious choice. Therefore, in conjunction with our education and training department, we put together the ‘Wired for Success – ECA Women into Electrical Contracting’ initiative – a well-rounded campaign, which would help her to achieve her goal of bringing women into the industry, on the back of the new NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Installing, Testing and Ensuring Compliance of Electrical Installations in a Dwelling qualification. The ECA Public Affairs’ policy is based on

providing government with tangible solutions and Wired for Success offers a solution that has the potential not only to revolutionise the face of electrical contracting, but also to have a much wider application within the building services sector, construction and beyond. To test our theory, we joined forces with principal
partners L&Q (London and Quadrant Housing Trust), one of the UK’s largest housing associations, to conduct a pilot programme. Through L&Q we secured further funding, support and on-site training from our contractor partners, Axis, Mulalley and Smith & Byford. We then teamed up with our training partner, EAS Education, which put together
a flexible programme specifically designed with women in mind. We believe that with a little bit of thought, a helping of flexibility, along with a group of like- minded companies working together, we have created a template – a blueprint for success – which can be applied to encourage women into non-traditional careers where they are under- represented and, on a more general level, also back into the workplace.
Spreading the message We intend to spread the message far and wide and hope to encourage others to follow our lead. Since initial talks started at the beginning of 2010, we have kept government officials apprised of the initiative, particularly those from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) – and it has been incredibly well received. We have put together a comprehensive public relations and public affairs campaign, designed to raise the profile of Wired for Success and to get government, housing associations, councils and as many other people as possible looking at ways in which they too can work together to provide a solution in their area. I am confident that there will be much to report by way of developments in the coming months, and I look forward to sharing more good news in upcoming issues of ECA Today.
